Janis Lyn Joplin, born January 19, 1943, was an American singer and guitarist. With powerful mezzo-soprano vocals and an “electric” stage presence, she was one of the most successful and well-known rock stars of her era. At the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, Joplin rose to popularity as the lead vocalist of the then-unknown San Francisco psychedelic rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company. After two albums, she left Big Brother to pursue a solo career with her own backing bands, first the Kozmic Blues Band and then the Full Tilt Boogie Band.
